My first live gig.

1stgig.jpg

I played my first live ukulele performance at a bar during my company’s Holiday/Christmas/End-of-Year party last night.

I was warned ahead of time that someone was bringing a karaoke machine and everyone was expected to sing before the night was through. Um, no, I don’t do karaoke. However, being the flexible and magnanimous spirit that I am, I agreed that if I had to sing I wanted to at least be able to accompany myself on songs I liked instead of singing to a pre-recorded ’80s rock ballad. So I plugged in, took the mic, and butchered a few of my favorites.

First up, I warm up the crowd and then dive into my arrangement of John Lennon’s “Imagine”. I screwed it up halfway through.

Next, I tried my version of Mike Doughty’s “Train to Chicago”. I think it’s a rather appropriate song choice given the inebriated nature of the crowd. I also screwed this one up halfway through, natch.

(If for some reason the videos don’t play for you, try going directly to YouTube to view them by clicking right around here.)

Now, you have to understand that this was my first musical performance in front of a live audience. I still don’t consider myself a “musician” per se, I’m just a guy who goofs around on uke. I was a little nervous, and it didn’t help that people were yelling stuff up at me while I was playing, but at least I tried not to embarrass myself too much. (Did it work??)

    Very cool man.

I admire anyone who can play music, let alone one who can play in front of people. :)

Thanks. One thing I learned from this experience was that I shouldn’t stop if I mess up… Just keep strummin’ and smilin’.
