Jim's Ukulele Junk

Ukulele Musings, Music and Movies.

A couple new ukes.

I bought these ukuleles at San Diego Comic Con last week. They were painted by Scott Morse.

The turtle uke is my favorite new player.

I’m back from another trip to Comic Con. What a great show!

Today I taped an episode of the Indie Music Show.

Last week they invited me to come on the show and perform a couple original songs, so I gladly took them up on it. I was pretty nervous, but Mark and all the crew were incredibly nice, professional and patient with me as I settled in and performed “Something About You” and “Honey Wine” while the cameras rolled. It wasn’t my best performance ever, but the atmosphere was pretty laid back and I had a lot of fun with it.

Lisa took lots of pictures during the recording session.

The show will be edited in about 6-8 weeks and should air on Channel 17 sometime then. I’ll post a link when it goes on YouTube around the same time.

Next up: Busking at the Comic Con! In a couple days I’ll be leaving for San Diego where I’ll be playing the ukulele for the crowd as I sell my comic books.

Yellow Bird.

The sun was still shining when I got home from work and the birds in my back yard were singing, so I decided to join them. I sat on the back porch strumming my ukulele and recorded this old island tune. If you listen closely at the very end you can hear the birds; they nest in the vines and trees outside my door.

The picture above is of the banana trees in my garden. As you can see, they flower every year and produce edible bunches of bananas.

It’s still a rough recording — I might clean it up a bit later, maybe.

In My Life.

Here’s another of my ukulele recordings from the Beatles catalog.

It’s been said that George Harrison’s music is easily translated for the ukulele (and he loved playing the uke), and I have taught myself a few of his songs. Personally, I favor Lennon/McCartney compositions and I think they’re quite fun to play.

This one is stripped down to just the basic tracks with no reverb effects. I think it’s more up-front and personal that way.
