White Chocolate.

WC

Here’s something ridiculous to bring in the new year.

Back in 1988, my senior year of high school, my best friend Jimmy and I were part of a rap duo known as White Chocolate. Jimmy had a mini recording studio set up in his bedroom, complete with a 4-track recorder, mixers, equalizers, mics, sampling keyboards, and quite a lot of other gear that did who knows what.

I think we recorded almost a dozen rap songs (with titles like “I Be Cool” and “I Eat Raw Meat”), put together an album called Obnoxious but Healthy and gave cassette copies away to our friends. Surprisingly, it was well-received at the time. In retrospect it’s kind of embarrassing, but I had a lot of fun with it and was very proud of our work back then.

So, to commemorate the 20 year anniversary of White Chocolate, I present you with the album’s title track. I apologize for the poor sound quality. While I’m at it, I apologize for the poor artistic quality.

Happy new year, everyone!

Hold On To Me.

Last night I played a set at ROCKS downtown. It was a great show and I felt both honored and privileged to share the stage with some very talented folks.

I think I did okay for my first real gig. I was a little nervous but I managed to make it through the whole set and I think I covered my couple of mistakes pretty well. The crowd was very generous with their applause and seemed to enjoy the music, which feels really good.

I played five songs, including a couple new songs that nobody’s ever heard before. The newest is a country/western tune called “Hold On To Me” I wrote just a few days ago and I closed my set with it. Someone in the audience was singing harmony along with me which I thought was pretty neat.

Here’s a video of the performance my friend shot from the audience:

And here’s an edited stereo mix MP3 of the song suitable for iPods and such:

Imagination.

I had this Frank Barile painting commissioned for my kids as a Christmas present this year. They don’t have anything hanging over their beds, so I thought it would be nice to have something unique made for them.

Cool, eh?

Happy Holidays.

Open mic at Muddy Waters.

Tonight I played an open mic at Muddy Waters, a little coffee-shop-slash-pub downtown. I was surprised at the good turnout considering it’s such a stormy, cold and rainy night. But it was a great time with a lot of talented folks. The folks at Muddy Waters were very hospitable and put on a fun show. If you can make it to this, they do it every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. I highly recommend it.

I told corny jokes and performed three songs, one of which is a new one called “Dance With Me” that I recently finished.

I’m considering playing the open mic at Dargan’s Pub tomorrow night.
