Remember when I said I was gonna be on TV?

Well, here’s the performance. This was recorded way back in July, which was 10 pounds and a beard ago (I’ve since lost both). I’ve never performed on television before, so I was nervous as hell and it kinda shows.

Jim likes to…

Just for a bit of fun, using Google (or whatever search engine floats your boat) search for your name, followed by ‘likes to’ surrounding both by double quotes. For example, “Jim likes to”. Then write down the first 10 search results.

This is what mine came back with:

  • Jim likes to use big fancy words and monologue when he addresses someone.
  • Jim likes to play football, pass, pass, pass.
  • Jim likes to tell this story about one of the beneficial effects of biodiesel — the elimination of the well known diesel fuel exhaust odor.
  • Jim likes to read about farming, sing to his pets and advocate for positive change in state policies that endanger the future viability of agriculture.
  • Jim likes to hold occasional fireside chats in the church fellowship hall during which he regales a charmed congregation with tales stranger than fiction.
  • Jim likes to do things in a certain order and dislikes his routines being altered.
  • Jim likes to keep his business separate from his charitable contributions.
  • Jim likes to get as many people on as he can comfortably.
  • Jim likes to work with holes made by insects, birds, small animals, etc.
  • Jim likes to lure people to his gingerbread house and abuse them.

Several of these statements are true about me. I’m not telling which.

What do you get when you try it?

The Ocean Song.

pono.jpg

I recently ordered a new ukulele (yes, another one) (yes, I have a problem) and it arrived from Hawaii last weekend. It’s a Pono made of curly koa and it’s a great little player with a nice, warm sound.

I took it out of the case and started playing it, just goofing around really, and suddenly this song began pouring out of me. I had the whole thing written in a matter of minutes. I’m starting to think maybe the song came with the ukulele, or the ukulele wrote it and I’m just channeling it. Anyway, I recorded it tonight and I think it came out okay.

Like all my songs, this was recorded on a Zoom H4 and then mastered in Cubase LE. In addition to the Pono I’m also playing a no-name longneck zebrawood uke on this one.

Liar liar, pants on fire.

I promised my kids I was going to take them to Disneyland this week, but I guess I lied. There’s just no way we can go now that southern California is burning from the mountains to the ocean.

Click the picture for a closer look. The wildfires aren’t very close to Disneyland but the air quality has been upgraded from “POOR” to “UNHEALTHY” and isn’t getting any better, so we’re staying home. Unfortunately, Santa Barbara has a pretty big cloud overhead too, mostly from ash and dust leftover from the Zaca Fire that’s blowing into town. The ground is covered by a fine layer of black soot and everything smells like a used pack of Lucky Strikes.

Oh well. Mickey Mouse can wait a few months. In the meantime I’m going to stay home, clean my desk, play with my kids and snuggle with my wife. The weekend will be filled with other fun things to do, like taking the kids to a Halloween party and marching them down State Street in the Halloween parade, stuff like that.

I just wish it wasn’t so hot. It’s like we’re a mile from the sun.
