That may look like an atomic bomb cloud, and it sure feels like we’re having a nuclear winter in the middle of summer, but it’s really the fallout from the Zaca Fire in the mountains behind Santa Barbara.
This thing is bananas. It’s been going since July 4 and they don’t expect to have it contained for three more weeks. So far, over 140,000 acres have burned.
Here’s an interesting time-lapse video of a large plume of smoke that was visible all over the city the other day. Apparently, the smoke generated a cloud of ice above it and basically created its own weather system, which made for some stunning visuals. It looked like a small volcano was erupting.
Now there’s a huge cloud of ash hanging over the entire city, blotting out the sun and keeping us all very hot and humid. It’s like a big, smoky blanket of fog that rains black dust everywhere. I hope it calms down soon. I feel like I’m living inside a chain smoker’s lung.

We had a great time last weekend at the Fiesta (Old Spanish Days) children’s parade downtown. Lisa dressed up the kids in cute costumes and decorated their wagon, and we marched down State Street where ice cream was waiting for everyone at the bottom.
